In March, the 2023 World Triathlon Cup season got underway in New Zealand and returns this week to southern Mexico, in the state of Oaxaca, for the World Triathlon Cup Huatulco. Elite races will start in the beautiful coastal town on Saturday, with the Americas Triathlon Mixed Relay Championships to be staged on Sunday. The fields are stacked with athlete chasing valuable Olympic and ranking points in a crucial Olympic qualification window. The course in Huatulco is a sprint-distance triathlon featuring a beach start for the 750m swim in the Pacific Ocean, a fierce 20km bike course (4-laps) and will come down to a 5km run segment (2-laps). Rosa Maria Tapia Vidal crossed the line in fourth place in the 2023 World Triathlon Cup New Plymouth, created history in Yokohama as she was awarded the first WTCS medal for Mexico in years with a silver medal and came tenth in the recent World Triathlon Championships Series Cagliari. Mexico’s rising star will be wearing number one on race day and will be looking to continue her brilliant season with a podium in front of a home crowd in Huatulco. Mexico will be well represented in the field with fellow compatriot Lizeth Rueda Santos next on the start list.
Gina Sereno, Katie Zaferes and Gwen Jorgensen racing in Huatulco
USA’s Gina Sereno is at the pointy end of the start list with stellar results on her resume including gold in the 2023 Arena Games Triathlon Series Montreal powered by Zwift. Olympic medallist Katie Zaferes is producing strong and encouraging results in her return to racing. Zaferes will be looking to perform in the heat of Huatulco as she stays focussed on her pathway to Paris 2024. Zaferes is wearing number five on the women’s start list come Saturday.
2026 Olympic Triathlon champion Gwen Jorgensen is back on a World Triathlon Cup start line in Huatulco. After coming 14th in New Plymouth and a disappointing race in the recent 2023 World Triathlon Championship Series Cagliari, Jorgensen will be ready to put it all on the line come Saturday.
