Marisol Casado closes spectacular 2023 World Triathlon Multisport Championships Ibiza

Ten days, 61 nations, thousands of athletes and one beautiful island, the 2023 World Triathlon Multisport Championships Ibiza delivered an absolute festival of swimming, biking and running in all its forms from the opening Parade of Nations on 28 April to the final medals and awards on 7 May.

As well as World Champions at elite, U23, junior, Para and age group categories being crowned, 15 Multisport Legends were recognised for another enormous achievement: competing in five different events across the 10 days.

The action saw the Duathlon formats of Sprint, Standard, Cross and 2x2 Mixed Relay, Aquathlon, Cross Triathlon, Long Distance Triathlon and Long Distance Aquabike racing across three venues; Santa Eulalia, San Antonio and Ibiza Town each bringing their own unique flavour to proceedings.

These were also the first Multisport Championships to be awarded the Gold Certificate for Sustainability, and only the third ever World Triathlon event to receive the accolade. A zero-single-use-plastic event, there were parallel initiatives in tandem with FETRI’s Good Loop programme that included a beach clean and tree-planting event to try and minimise the event’s impact and bring some conscientiousness to all the competition.

“As we come to the close of the Ibiza edition of the World Triathlon Multisport Championships, we can now look back over a magical ten days of competition, of thousands of athletes coming together to compete, take part and cheer each other on and, just as importantly, to be part of the most sustainable edition of this event that we have ever seen,” said World Triathlon President and IOC member Marisol Casado.

“When we awarded Ibiza the golden certificate for sustainability ahead of the championships, it was to recognise the care and effort of the LOC in creating an event that would leave the smallest possible imprint on this beautiful island. You have all played a huge part in that, too, in embracing the efforts made to hold a sustainable event and play your part in future generations being able to enjoy our planet’s most beautiful settings just as you have been.”

“Congratulations to all who have taken part and thank you for your dedication to our beautiful sport. Our elite athletes are the pinnacle of endurance sport, our Age Groupers are the heart of our community. I hope you have all enjoyed yourselves, made new friends and achieved what you came here to do.”

“I speak for us all when I say a huge than you to the LOC, to FETRI, and to the island of Ibiza for welcoming us with open arms. The bar has been raised once again and I hope to see as many of you as possible when we head to Townsville, Australia, for the 2024 edition of these championships in just over a year from now!”
