World Triathlon and the IPC approve the Qualification System for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games

World Triathlon is pleased to announce that the International Paralympic Committee has approved the Paralympic Rankings and the Qualification Criteria for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.

Following the announcement of the 11 medal events that will be disputed in para triathlon in Paris 2024, where a quota of 120 has been allocated, the class-up system that will be in place will guarantee that all para triathletes from all sport classes will have the opportunity to compete in the next Paralympic Games.

The Paralympic Qualification Period will start on July 1, 2023 and will finish on July 1, 2024. World Triathlon may exceptionally include Continental Championships’ results that have occurred outside, but no later than the end of the qualification period.

“The approval by the IPC of the proposed qualification criteria is a great step forward to ensure participation of all the sport classes at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games”, said Marisol Casado, World Triathlon President and IOC member. “With an athlete quota of 120, we can ensure that all para triathletes around the world will have the chance to qualify for the Paralympics and represent our sport at the most important event in their careers. After the great success we’ve had in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020, this criteria offers our sport an opportunity to consolidate its presence at the Games and continue growing worldwide”, she explained.

For the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, para triathletes will have the chance to compete in 11 medal events. For the men categories, medals will be awarded for the PTWC, PTVI, PTS2, PTS3, PTS4 and PTS5 categories. On the women’s side, medals will be contested on the PTWC, PTVI, PTS2, PTS4 and PTS5 classes.

For all Medal Events except Women’s PTS4, the top nine ranked athletes on the
World Triathlon Paralympic Qualification Ranking as of 1 July 2024 within each medal event will obtain one qualification slot for their National Paralympic Committee (NPC) up to a maximum of two slots per NPC.

For the Women’s PTS4 Medal Event, the top nine PTS4 ranked athletes on the
World Triathlon Paralympic Qualification PTS4 Ranking as of 1 July 2024 each obtain one qualification slot for their NPC, up to a maximum of two (2) slots per NPC. The top five PTS3 ranked athletes on the World Triathlon Paralympic Qualification
PTS4 Ranking as of 1 July 2024 each obtain one qualification slot for their NPC, up to a maximum of one slot per NPC.

Another sixteen eligible athletes will be selected by the IPC and World Triathlon for Bipartite Commission Invitations, that can be allocated in any class or gender but ideally keeping the gender balance of the event.
